Broward County Style Tempeh Bacon

This tempeh bacon recipe is a vegan dish served commonly in OaklandPark and Wilton Manors.  It is much healthier than regular bacon and it also has less fat and is cholesterol-free. You can buy the ingredients at Sasaya Japanese Market or have it delivered via doordash.com throughout Broward county. It is just a great excuse to putz in the kitchen. This recipe is all about timing.

             CookTime: 5 mins

             TotalTime: 15 minutes

             Cuisine: Vegan, Gluten Free

INGREDIENTS

             5 oz. tempeh (140 g)

             1 tbsp. soy sauce or tamari

             1 tbsp.extra virgin olive oil for the marinade + extra virgin olive oil to taste forfrying the bacon

             1 tbsp.agave syrup

             ½ tsp redhot sauce

             2 tspsmoke flavoring

             ½ tspground cumin

             Blackpepper and salt to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

1.            Slice the tempeh as thin as you can without it falling apart.

2.            Mix the rest of the ingredients (except the salt) in a bowl. Soak the tempeh slices inthe marinade for 1 or 2 minutes.

3.            Heat extra virgin olive oil in a sauté pan and when it’s hot, add the tempeh and cook for 1 or 2 minutes each side over high heat until both sides are browned and crisp.

4.            Lay cooked tempeh on paper towel to cool. Add salt to taste.
